Just found the link to the right there with info about cotton warp quilts. Looks like a forum where just about anyone can answer questions, so no clue how accurate this is. But this person seemed to be familiar with the Anne books and knew a bit of history. Here's what they said:
"Knitting a counterpane in cotton warp would be the equivalent of knitting a bedspread in heavy crochet cotton today. A considerable investment in time and money. A comfortable middle class sort of thing to be doing."
