I came late to all things Anne, a friend of mine told me abt her and made me watch the last tape in the series. I'm not big on period pieces so I wasnt expecting to enjoy it, but OMG it was great!!! When Gilbert lay in bed dying, I made her pause the tape and tell me if he lived or not. She said she didnt want to tell me, but since I hate sad endings, I made her. At the end I'm crying my eyes out and everybody is looking at me, surprised at how emotional I was. They were afraid I was still crying abt Gil, but I told them no, this was the most beautiful movie I'd ever seen. I went right out and got all 4 tapes and then went out and bought the first 3 books. Its amazing how much more is in the book. I've been mostly knitting than reading, but I plan to start the book on Monday after I get the kids in school.

I'm impressed by all of the shawls, since I don't know I'd have the commitment to knit something so long at such fine gauge.

Shawls are not as difficult as you might think. Most lace consists of yarn overs and decreases. Remember that they are generally knit at a loose gauge. Look for an easy pattern that has some plain rows between the
thinking rows". Use markers between the repeats of the pattern and check your row count now and then.

I agree with Paula. Think of a rectangle shawl as a really big scarf. Its the same thing. And my shawl is being knit with size 7 needles. I started it in May so its taking me some time, but I hope to be done with it by the end of October.
